2021 Auctions reflect strong upward trend
In 2021, the top auction houses were successful in drawing back collectors across the globe to their marquee sales after a long hiatus. In the process, the houses generated records for various artists.
Sotheby’s Wine’s annual auction sales of wines and spirits reached record heights in 2021, increasing 44% to $132 million. An Agnes Martin painting from a private collection sparked a bidding war, eventually selling for a record price of $17.7 million. Other record prices were notched for Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Lee Bontecou and more.
